University of Ghana warns public against imposter posing as Professor Gordon Awandare

The University of Ghana has issued a warning to the public about an individual who is impersonating Professor Gordon Awandare, the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs) and Founding Director of the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) on Facebook.

The impersonator, who is using the name Gordon Mensah, has been posting pictures of Prof. Awandare and pretending to be him.

The University has stated that Professor Awandare has no connection to this individual and strongly advises against engaging with him or providing him with any personal information. Management also added that Professor Awandare does not have a Facebook account.

“The Public Affairs Directorate of the University of Ghana wishes to inform the public that someone by the name of Gordon Mensah is currently impersonating Professor Gordon Awandare, the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs) and Founding Director of the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP), of the University of Ghana on Facebook. The said Gordon Mensah is posting pictures of Prof. Awandare and pretending to be him.

The University of Ghana would like to clarify that Professor Gordon Awandare has no connection whatsoever to this individual and we strongly advise against engaging with him or providing him with any personal information. We would also like to put on record that Professor Awandare has never owned a Facebook account.”

The University of Ghana is taking this matter of online impersonation seriously and has reported the impersonator to the relevant social media platforms.

The institution is also working with the appropriate authorities to ensure that this matter is resolved as quickly as possible.

The University is urging the public to exercise caution and to be vigilant when engaging with individuals online, especially those who claim associations with University of Ghana officials.
