The Electoral Commission of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) has announced the official balloting results for the 2024 UGSRC executive elections.
The balloting, which took place on August 17, 2024, sets the stage for the upcoming elections by determining the order in which candidates will appear on the ballot.
In a statement signed by the UGSRC Electoral Commissioner, Mudassir-Ibn Ibrahim, the commission assured the student body that the balloting was conducted in a transparent and fair manner, adhering to the principles of electoral integrity.
For the Presidential race, Noah Nii Afoley Odai and Abigail Ohenewaa Addai will occupy the first spot on the ballot, followed by Emmanuel Mensah and Justice Mbawin Abugri, with Blessing Mantey and Martin Agbefia rounding out the list.
In the contest for General Secretary, Duodu Faith Constance will be listed first, with Deborah Febiri-Damoah and Lorinda Teyehugmeh following in that order.
The Treasurer position will see Jonathan Kankam at the top of the ballot, with Michael Arhin Nash and Roland Oppong taking number two and number three respectively.
The Electoral Commission expressed its commitment to ensuring a smooth and transparent election process and extended its best wishes to all candidates.
The balloting comes after two of the most promising presidential candidates tickets, ManuelLife and Lawrence Edinam Egleh, and Guru NKZ and JayLit have been disqualified over their each ticket’s mate being a non-resident during the vetting process. The disqualification was based on Article 30 of the UGSRC constitution, as cited by the EC.
Meanwhile, a legal activist has described the basis of the disqualification as unfair, stating that the article used as basis had already been expunged.
The disqualified candidate tickets were then advised to take the matter to court considering what has been described as an unlawful decision; Guru NKZ has already taken the step by sending the case to the UGSRC Judicial board.
