#UGDecides ’24: Results and key takeaways

The much-anticipated University of Ghana SRC elections concluded on September 18, 2024. With a voter turnout of 18,659 out of 59,629 eligible students, Maradona Adjei Yeboah, popularly known as Guru, and his running mate Jeffery Adu Yeboah, also known as JayLitt, emerged victorious in the presidential race with 9,455 votes, representing 50.7%. They were closely followed by Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah, popularly called Manuel Life, and Lawrence Edinam Egleh, who garnered 6,645 votes, making up 35.6% of the total. Other candidates, Emmanuel Mensah and Justice Mbawin Abugri, secured 378 votes, averaging 2%. Noah Nii Afotey Odai and Abigail Oheneba Addai received 1,518 votes, averaging 8.1%, while Blessing Mantey and Martin Agbefia obtained 459 votes, averaging 2.5%.

The races for General Secretary and Treasurer were also competitive but will proceed to a runoff, as no candidate reached the 50% + 1 vote threshold.

In the General Secretary race, Lorinda Owie Teyehugmeh led with 8,713 votes, amounting to 46.7%, followed by Deborah Fabiri Damoah with 5,642 votes, averaging 30.2%. Duodu Faith Constance placed third with 3,705 votes, totaling 19.9%.

For Treasurer, Roland Oppong led with 9,092 votes, averaging 48.7%, against Jonathan Kankam’s 8,120 votes, representing 43.5%. Michael Arhin Nash came in third with 1,026 votes, amounting to 5.5%.

The date for the runoff elections for both the General Secretary and Treasurer positions has been scheduled by the Interim SRC Electoral Commissioners for Monday, September 23, 2024, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
