The University of Ghana athletics team has emerged as champions of the athletics competition in the ongoing Ghana Universities Debate championship at Kwame Nkrumah University of science and technology.
Team UG claimed ten Gold medals, seven silver medals, and six bronze medals to conquer the contest.
The Director of Sports at UG sports directorate, Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu, stated,
“This is the manifestation of the silent and patient investment. It means we are doing something right to beat even those universities that specialise in physical education and sports. This is the result of what we are doing. I personally feel fulfilled and thank you, Team UG, from Senior Management to the student athletes.” he said.
In reaction to the triumph, Cadman Evans Dufu Yamoah, High Jump Gold Medalist, expressed his delight after clinching gold,
“I am delighted to win my second GUSA gold medal in High Jump and set the record for two consecutive times. Ebenezer Gyimah of the University of Cape Coast gave me a stern competition; however, I was determined to write my name and that of UG in gold correctly, so it happened.” he said.
UG won a total of 23 medals, consisting of 10 gold, seven silver, and six bronze in 9 track and seven field events. UG won gold in 100m men, 200m women, 400m men and women, 1500m men, 4x100m men, Javelin women, Discus men, High Jump men, and Long Jump men
At the end of the athletics competition, this is how the medal table stands; UG led with ten Gold medals, seven silver medals, and six bronze medals. The University of Cape Coast placed second with ten Gold medals, five silver medals, and six bronze medals. University of education winneba finished third with seven gold medals, twelve silver medals, and nine bronze medals.
The fourth position is the University of development studies, which won the athletics competition last year at UG and clinched six gold medals, six silver medals, and five bronze medals. Hosts KNUST finished fifth with two gold medals, three silver medals, and five bronze medals. Sixth on the medal table is the University of Energy and natural resources, with two silver medals and one bronze medal.
After winning the athletics competition, team UG will be looking forward to performing well in the remaining competitions and emerging as the overall champions at the end of the GUSA games.
