UG: ECs to submit aspirant lists to Students Affairs Directorate for upcoming elections

The Electoral Commission (EC) of the University of Ghana’s Student Representative Council (UGSRC) has announced that all ECs of various students institutions on campus are required to submit the lists of aspirants for students elections to the Dean of Student Affairs.

This was announced in a statement released by the SRC’s EC on 7th June, 2023.

According to the UGSRC-EC, the measure is to verify that aspirant students meet the required Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.0 to be eligible to contest in elections.

The various students bodies required to submit their lists must be registered under the Office of the Students Affairs, as noted in the statement.

The Commission also stated that this step is to ensure transparency and integrity in the students elections.‎

All ECs were urged to comply with the directive to ensure fairness in the election process.

“To ensure transparency and uphold the integrity of the student elections, the UGSRC Electoral Commission will take this opportunity to clear all doubts, all Electoral Commissioners (ECs) of various academic and non-academic institutions registered under the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, including TEIN, TESCON, VORSA, etc., are required to submit the list of aspirants to the Dean of Student Affairs. This step is crucial for verifying that the aspirants meet the basic requirement of a CGPA of 3.0 to be eligible to contest in the elections. We urge all ECs to comply with this requirement to maintain the fairness of the electoral process.”

The UGSRC-EC went on to highlight its role in overseeing elections across the University to ensure fair and peaceful elections.

It also pointed out that funding for electoral processes must be taken from dues paid by students in their respective institutions and JCRs. For alternative arrangements, approval must be sought from the Dean of Student Affairs before funds can be received from other sources.

It concluded by entreating adressees of the statement to cooperate with the guidelines mentioned in the statement in an effort to ensure fair and successful student elections.
