The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the School of Languages at the University of Ghana, Jeff Elikem Apasu, has appealed to university management to establish dedicated facilities to enhance the learning of languages at the university.
This follows concerns about the inadequate practical learning tools available to language students.
Speaking on Campus Exclusive, Apasu described the situation as one of the major operational challenges confronting the School.
He stressed the urgent need for language labs to ensure students gain the practical skills necessary for effective language acquisition.
“We share the various lecture halls with other departments, and in terms of audiovisual equipment to help students practise these languages, they are not available in these lecture halls. If management could build language labs to enable students to actually speak their languages better, that would be great, yeah,” he said.
Also, President of the School of Languages, Derrick Nimako, emphasised the value of language studies and the wide range of opportunities they present to students.
“Learning and speaking a different language places you on a pedestal because it broadens your job prospects. For someone who speaks only English, opportunities are limited to Anglophone countries. If you speak French, for instance, you can work in France, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire. Speaking Chinese gives you access to China, and Chinese has become a global language. Even in law, being multilingual could make you an international lawyer handling cases across borders,” he explained.
