Dr Kwaku Botwe, General Manager of Radio Univers, has unveiled plans to strengthen the station’s impact by forging partnerships with other tertiary institutions and creating new opportunities for hands-on broadcasting training.

He made this known while addressing guests at a send-off dinner held in honour of level 400 newsroom volunteers at the Volta Hall Dining Hall on September 15, 2025.

According to Dr Botwe, the initiative is aimed at reaching a wider audience while providing students across the country with practical experience in broadcasting.

“What we are doing is to create partnerships with other universities in Ghana that offer journalism programmes. Of course, journalism is a craft — you have to do it to know it. But it is important to build that network with other journalism institutions.

“We have visited a number of universities around us, such as Wisconsin, G.I.J. (UNIMAC-IJ), Academic City, and NAFTI, and we are developing partnerships where their students can write news and share information about events on their campuses. They will also have the opportunity to come to the University of Ghana for practical exposure, because most of them are learning the theory without practice. Through this initiative, we want to expand our influence and reach beyond the walls of Legon,” he revealed.

Dr. Botwe also announced plans to introduce a regular alumni homecoming event to connect former newsroom volunteers with the current team, providing mentorship and sharing real-world experiences.

“I would like to encourage all final-year volunteers who are leaving to come back frequently. Don’t just leave — come home, spend time with the current volunteers, and share your experiences, just as Giovanni Caleb and Joseph Ackah-Blay usually do. You can spend a day in the newsroom and pass on what you have learned. In fact, this will be a formalised event where Univers alumni can return to inspire and guide the next generation,” he added.
