The Nigeria football Federation has appointed German tactician, Bruno Labbadia as the new manager of the senior national team, the Super Eagles.

The Federation’s General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi confirmed in the early hours of Tuesday.

“The NFF Executive Committee has approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee to appoint Mr. Bruno Labbadia as the Head Coach of the Super Eagles. The appointment is with immediate effect,” Dr. Sanusi noted.

The German tactician, 58, replaces Finidi George, who stepped down in June following a series of disappointing results in less than 2 months since his appointment.

George guided the Eagles to a 1-1 draw against South Africa at home in Uyo and a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic in Abidjan, placing Nigeria’s World Cup qualification in significant jeopardy.

The two outcomes prolonged Nigeria’s winless streak in the qualifiers, following two draws under former coach Jose Peseiro.

Nigeria now sits in 5th place, only above Zimbabwe, in Group C for the 2026 World Cup qualification.

Bruno Labbadia becomes the 37th head coach of the Super Eagles.

The German’s  immediate challenge is overseeing the three-time African champions in two 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches: against Benin Republic on Saturday, September 7, in Uyo, and against Rwanda on Tuesday, September 10, in Kigali.

Four additional matches will follow in October and November to conclude the qualifying campaign.
