The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has declared a nationwide strike set for October 10, 2024, in protest against illegal mining, commonly known as Galamsey.

The strike is in solidarity with Organized Labour, which is calling for action against the environmental destruction caused by Galamsey activities, particularly the contamination of the country’s water bodies.

Speaking exclusively to univers news, GPRTU’s Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Moro Abass, confirmed the union’s participation in the strike, stating that it will continue until further notice from Organized Labour.

“We are members of the organized labour and their decision of embarking on strike makes us automatic members of such decisions. We will embark on a sit-down strike on 10th October against Galamsey and until the Organized Labour advises otherwise we are not calling it off. Every small vehicle including Taxis and Trotro, articulator trucks, and long vehicles etc across the country will participate in the nationwide strike”

The strike will involve all categories of vehicles, including taxis, Trotros, articulator trucks, and long vehicles, across the country.
