GPL 24/25 MWK 24: Kotoko hold on to top spot after Hearts of Oak and GoldStars slip

The 2024/25 Ghana Premier League served up an electrifying set of matches, with some teams rising to the occasion and producing outstanding displays, while others defied expectations and fell short of predictions.

The games began on Saturday at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena, where FC Samartex drew 1-1 with Asante Kotoko. Awuah Dramani put the hosts ahead in the 38th minute, but Kotoko quickly responded after the break, with Kwame Poku equalizing in the 46th minute.

At the Nana Agyemang Badu Park, Young Apostles pulled off a surprise victory, defeating Accra Lions 1-0. Hussein Issah scored the only goal of the match in the 72nd minute, earning the hosts all three points.

Hearts of Oak suffered a blow in their title pursuit, losing 1-0 to Dreams FC at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium. Abdul Razak Salifu’s early strike in the third minute was enough to secure the win for Dreams FC.

On Sunday, Bechem United triumphed 2-0 over Vision FC at Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park, with Yaw Annor scoring a quick brace in the 24th and 25th minutes.

Heart of Lions narrowly defeated Karela United 1-0 in a tense match at the Kpando Sports Stadium. Kwesi Pong’s 72nd-minute goal gave the hosts a vital win.

Nations FC fought to secure a 2-1 victory over Medeama SC at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex. Razak Simpson’s stunning free-kick in the 32nd minute put Nations FC ahead, and after Yusuf Mubarak equalized in the 60th minute with a penalty, Faisal Charwartey’s powerful header in the 78th minute sealed the win for the home side.

Legon Cities kept their survival hopes alive with a crucial 2-1 victory over Berekum Chelsea at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium. Mohammed Alidu gave Legon Cities the lead, but Stephen Amankona equalized for Berekum Chelsea. A late goal from Kabu Agyemang Raymond ensured a vital win for the Royals.

Aduana FC delivered a dominant 2-0 win over Bibiani GoldStars at Nana Agyemang Badu Park. Kelvin Obeng was the hero, scoring twice in the 7th and 11th minutes to secure victory for the Fire Club.

The match between Basake Holy Stars and Nsoatreman FC was abandoned after Nsoatreman withdrew from the league due to safety concerns.

After Matchday 24, Asante Kotoko, Bibiani GoldStars, Heart of Lions, and Hearts of Oak occupy the top four spots, while Legon Cities, Karela United, and Accra Lions are in the relegation zone.
