Some members of the public have showered praises on Ghana’s all time top scorer, Asamoah Gyan as they recall their fondest memories following his retirement.
Ghana’s football legend, Asamoah Gyan has called it a quit to active football, his football career has lasted two decades since he emerged in 2003, and he has achieved a lot at both club and international levels.
According to them, despite the fact that Gyan could not lead the nation to claim laurels and his shortcomings, he is regarded as a legend considering his achievement for the national team and the clubs he played.
In an exclusive interview with Univers Sports, some members of the Public shared their fondest memories of the former Black Stars striker;
“Asamoah Gyan is a legend of the game. He will go down as the greatest Ghanaian striker of all time and he’s a legend. His accolades speak for himself. He’s a one in a million. Ghana as a nation is blessed to have had him as a striker and we pray we get somebody like him” one individual told Univers Sports.
Another said: “Asamoah Gyan was the idol we all looked up to. He’s our local idol and has scored important goals for Ghana throughout the years. He made a few mistakes especially missing that penalty and other great of football have done the same mistake. talking of baggio who became a dead man stand . Asamoah Gyan has really contributed his part. He will forever remain the Ghanaian footballing icon and African one as such”
One individual recalled the goal he scored to send Ghana through to the quarter finals against USA and considers him one of the best forwards in the game.
“Asamoah Gyan is one of the best center forwards in the world domestically and internationally wise but for me the best moment of Asamoah Gyan was the goal he scored against USA in the 2010 Fifa world cup when Ghana was drawing with USA.
“He was the First Ghanaian to score against Czech Republic. He also holds the record of being the top African goal scorer in the World Cup and we also remember the bad moment of him when he had the whole world just scoring the penalty for Ghana to go to the semi finals and unfortunately he missed it against Uruguay.” Another fan recounted his memories of the former black stars skipper.
GYAN’S FOOTBALL HISTORY
Asamoah Gyan’s record for the national team is impeccable having been Ghana’s top max man for the past 20 yrs, the former Liberty professional’s prodigy is currently his country’s all-time top scorer, having scored 51 goals for the Black Stars.
Aside from being Ghana’s highest scorer ever, Gyan is also Ghana’s second most-capped player with 109 appearances. He was toppled by the current captain of the Black Stars Andre Ayew, who currently has 113 caps to his name.
Gyan became the first Ghanaian to score at the World Cup, where he opened the scoring in Ghana’s 2-0 victory over the Czech Republic, giving the Black Stars their first World Cup victory.
He leads the chart as Africa’s highest scorer at the World Cup with six goals, with Roger Milla and Ahmed Musa behind by one and two goals, respectively. ‘Baby Jet’ as he was affectionately called held the record for the first player to score in nine consecutive major international competitions.
The former Sunderland striker scored in every major competition from the 2006 World Cup to the 2017 AFCON and that record was only overtaken by Cristiano Ronaldo during the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
Again in 2010, he was named BBC African Footballer of the Year beating off competition from compatriot Andre Ayew, Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure.
