The skyrocketing prices of data and Internet bundles in Ghana have triggered growing concerns among citizens. Ghanaians are expressing frustration over the exorbitant prices of data bundles and are calling on authorities to address the issue promptly.

This was after the National Communications Authority (NCA) released a statement dated 21st July justifying its decision to classify MTN as a Significant Market Power (SMP). By doing so…..

In the statement, the NCA pointed out that data prices in Ghana are actually lower compared to many other parts of Africa based on a study from an organisation from the UK.

The NCA emphasized that the SMP classification is intended to promote fair competition and protect consumer choice, rather than impose restrictions on MTN’s operations.

Find below the statement from NCA.

Ghanaians are now looking to the NCA and other relevant authorities to take concrete steps to alleviate the burden of high data costs.

“The surge in the cost of data is too high in Ghana. This has been ongoing for quite a while but can not be kept in anymore that is why the need to speak up.”

“Even Nigeria noted to be our sister country has lower cost in purchasing data as compared to Ghana. Gh 95.00 when converted to Naira can purchase 100 gigabyte worth of data. However in Ghana gh350 can only buy 95 gigabytes worth of data. This is quite alarming hence something must be done immediately to curb the issue.”

With the internet playing an increasingly vital role in everyday life, citizens are hopeful that swift action will be taken to ensure affordable access to data for all.
