Ghana Football Association to Introduce VAR in Ghana Premier League, says Okraku

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku has revealed that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) is expected to be introduced in the Ghana Premier League.

This revelation was made while addressing the media on Friday, August 9 in Sunyani.

“We will introduce VAR to our football,” stated Kurt Okraku, highlighting the GFA’s commitment to embracing technological advancements in the sport.

He added that the introduction of VAR is a key component of the GFA’s strategy aimed at elevating the standards of refereeing in the country.

“Whatever we will do to introduce VAR into football, we will, as part of our overall strategy for improving refereeing starting from our GPL, we will. It’s coming,” he stated during the Meet the Press event on Friday

He emphasised that the initial phase of this implementation would start with the Ghana Premier League (GPL).

Ghana only witnessed VAR during the 2022 World Cup qualifier against Nigeria at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, where a penalty decision was reversed with the help of VAR.

Last season, VAR was also used in the CAF Confederation Cup in Kumasi for Dreams FC’s knockout matches.
