The Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has notified the nation of the unyielding commitment of the Ghana Armed Forces to protect the country’s territorial integrity amidst the threats of instability in the West African sub-region.

The development follows the recent appearance of the Minister at the newly launched Government Accountability platform initiated by the Presidency to account for the stewardship of the Mahama-led administration in the past 6 months.

Speaking at the event on July 21, Dr. Boamah provided insights into the various collaborations the Ghana Armed Forces has undertaken with its strategic partners to safeguard the country against the threats of terrorism in the sub-region.

“Over the past months, the Ghana Armed Forces, through the Ministry of Defenc,e has been undergoing some training and capacity building with our partners to prepare adequately for the threat of instability in our sub region and the rank and file of the Military High Command stands ready to combat the emerging threats that surrounds us in a volatile region,” he said.

“To protect critical national infrastructure, there is a 24 hr patrol team manning vital national installations across the country, including the ports, the West African Gas pipeline, and others, in an era where security is a key ingredient to national development.

“The general public is to be at ease, that the government will do its utmost best to create a congenial atmosphere for businesses to thrive, to spur inclusive growth across the board as part of the reset agenda,” he added.

Dr Boamah further indicated that whilst a majority of the country remains relatively peaceful, and under the control of the National Security architecture, protracted conflicts in areas like Bawku and Alavanyo-Nkonya in the Upper East region and Volta regions respectively, remains on the radar of the Military High Command which will leave no stone unturned in its efforts to return normalcy and calm to those locations in the coming months.

“With large swathes of the country relatively peaceful and under the watchful eyes of the National Security apparatus, it is evident that there are isolated areas in the country, like Bawku in the Upper East region and Alavanyo-Nkonya in the Volta region, that are causing some tensions in the country.

“The Military High Command, in tandem with its sister security agencies, is committed to ensuring calm and peace in the aforementioned areas by being proactive and taking steps ahead of the selfish few who benefit from the chaos in those locations and will stop at nothing to maintain law and order.

“Notice is hereby served to persons forming trouble in those areas to be on the guard that the state will deal ruthlessly with any conflict-promoter who wants to engage in criminality under the guise of communal tensions over chieftaincy matters.”

The Government Accountability platform, which has been running for the past two weeks, is aimed at bringing governance to the doorsteps of ordinary citizens to be able to seek results-oriented leadership from the country’s leaders after taking over the reins of power in January 2025.
