Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah confirmed dead

Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed are among eight people confirmed dead after a military helicopter crashed in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6.

‎The crash, which occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District, also claimed the lives of top national security officials and military personnel.

Among those confirmed dead are Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Vice Chairman of the NDC Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye.

‎The aircraft’s crew include Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah also perished in the crash.

‎The tragic news was announced by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah at an emergency press conference. He directed that all national flags be flown at half-mast in honour of the victims and extended the government’s condolences to the bereaved families and the entire nation.

‎The Z-9 Ghana Armed Forces helicopter, which took off from Accra around 9:12 a.m. Tuesday, went off radar en route to Obuasi and was later found crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District.

‎Video and images shared appeared to show the charred remains of some victims, but officials are yet to provide information on what caused the crash.

‎Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who was attending an anti-illegal mining event nearby, reportedly abandoned the program and rushed to the scene upon hearing the news.

‎Authorities say a full investigation will be launched, and more updates are expected as families are notified.
