A medical officer at the department of Public Health here at the University of Ghana, Dr. Teion Dingu Bulgu has emphasized the urgent need for education and awareness to address the ongoing challenges posed by the epidemic.
Her comment comes in the wake of HIV/AIDS Awareness Month, observed every December to spotlight critical discussions on prevention, treatment, and the fight against stigma.
Speaking to Univers News, Dr. Teion Dingu Bulgu outlined effective methods for preventing HIV/AIDS transmission and the importance of making these resources more accessible to communities.
“One of the most effective ways to curb the spread of HIV is by increasing education and providing preventive tools, such as condoms and PrEP, while ensuring they are easily accessible to everyone, especially vulnerable communities.”
Addressing the progress in treatment, Dr. Teion shared the latest advancements in HIV management, including improved antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens that are more effective and have fewer side effects.
“We have made significant strides in HIV treatment, with newer antiretroviral therapies being more effective, easier to take, and causing fewer side effects, enabling those living with HIV to lead healthier lives.”
Dr. Teion also added some strategies to overcome the stigma surrounding HIV testing.
“To tackle the stigma surrounding HIV testing, we need to normalize conversations about HIV and create safe spaces where individuals feel supported and not judged.”
