Black Princesses defeat Benin in the opening game of the 2025 WAFU Zone B U20 Girls’ Cup

Ghana’s U20 women’s national team, the Black Princesses, opened their 2025 WAFU Zone B U20 Girls’ Cup title defense with a 2–0 victory over host nation Benin on Friday, November 7.

The defending champions dominated the early stages with their trademark wide play and quick transitions, though Benin’s compact defence initially kept them at bay.

Their breakthrough came midway through the first half when Diana Amoako delivered a precise long pass to Agnes Yeboah, who unselfishly set up Linda Owusu Ansah to slot home in the 23rd minute.

Benin struggled to find a response, rarely troubling the Ghanaian defence as the princesses remained in control and went into halftime with a deserved advantage.

After the restart, head coach Charles Sampson introduced Sarah Nyarko, whose energy revitalized the attack.

The Dreamz Ladies midfielder made her impact count in the 78th minute, calmly finishing to double Ghana’s lead and seal the win.

Latifa Musa shone in midfield, dictating the tempo and earning the Player of the Match award for her composure and control.

The result gives Ghana a strong start to their campaign as they look to defend the title they lifted last two years.

The Black Princesses will next face archrivals Nigeria on Saturday, November 8, in what promises to be a crucial group-stage clash.
