The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced plans to procure a DNA testing machine for the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, a development expected to significantly enhance Ghana’s forensic and diagnostic capabilities.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the institute’s Annual Research Meeting, the Minister revealed that the procurement process has been completed, and the machine is expected to be delivered soon.

The Minister attributed the decision to procure the machine to President John Dramani Mahama. The president issued a directive that DNA testing facilities be established in Ghana after samples from the helicopter crash victims were sent to South Africa for testing.

“Government wants to procure DNA testing machine for Noguchi, and we have completed the procurement processes.”

Hon. Akandoh praised the Noguchi Institute for its outstanding research contributions to the health sector.

“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the leadership and staff of Noguchi Memorial Institute. The breakthroughs achieved in your laboratories ripple across the nation, influencing clinical practices, informing public health policy, and shaping the well-being of millions.”

The Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Hiroshi Yoshimoto also reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to partnering with the institute, stating,

“We will continue to work side-by-side with the institute to support your vision and research priorities, strengthening your position as a leading institution in impactful research and innovation.”

This year’s Annual Research Meeting marks the climax of the 25th anniversary celebration of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Ghana.

The four-day event will feature a range of activities, bringing together researchers, scientists, students, and stakeholders to share ideas and showcase innovations.
