Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has revealed that the main aim of the Mahama-led government is to reduce the country’s huge food import bill while creating an enabling environment for the sector to regain its place of national importance through smart policies and innovative practices.

Taking his turn on the Government Accountability Series on November 24, 2025, Eric Opoku stated that the innovative policies and programmes being gradually rolled out by the administration have helped reduce the country’s food import bill from the $3 billion figure inherited from the Akufo-Addo administration.

“The effect of some of the policies, which cut across improved access to high-yielding seeds, the upgrading of both trunk and feeder roads, as well as enhanced irrigation facilities in the past few months, has led to a reduction in the country’s food import bill from the $3 billion amount handed to us by the previous administration, which resulted in food inflation hitting unexpected high levels of close to 61%,” he said.

Eric Opoku added that the next phase of the agricultural transformation programme is hinged on the ‘Feed Ghana’ agenda, which is aimed at enhancing the country’s food security while providing sustainable jobs and decent incomes for the growing number of economically active citizens and contributing significantly to national development.

“We are also focused on using the ‘Feed Ghana’ programme to kickstart the industrial revolution that our agric sector needs by creating decent and sustainable jobs for its players while ensuring food security and generating foreign exchange for the country when we export the surplus.”

The Government Accountability Series is a platform established by the government under the Office of Government Communications to enable duty bearers from state agencies to account for their stewardship when required.
