Secretary-General for the Association of African Universities in Accra- Ghana, Professor Olusola Bandele Oyewole has urged African educational institutions to adhere to truth and transparency systems in order to change the international narrative of education in Africa.
These were his opening remarks at the Ethics Model of Excellence Tool (EMET II) Conference, which was aimed at Strengthening Higher Education Institution’s (HEI’s) Ethical Performance Management.
Globethics.net, an international network of teachers and institutions, organized the event to promote ethical standards at higher education levels by training and providing resource tools to students, heads of academic institutions, and other professionals in the educational workplace.
Senior management from various Ghanaian universities, including the University of Professional Studies (UPSA), Accra College of Education, the University of Ghana, EP University-Ho, and the Akrofi- Christaller Institute, amongst others were present.
According to Prof. Bandele the inability of educational organizations to implement proper codes of conducts in academia has over the years grown into a major canker, that constantly disrupts the credibility of education in Africa. He believes that the “way to build ethical education in Africa, is to adhere to systems of transparency, truth and ethical standards” He said.
He further asked trainees present at the workshop to be diligent in their studies, and serve instrumentally in the campaign for ethics to be applied in schools.
“ Trainees in this workshop are expected to extend their etiquettes beyond our various nation’s so that our rankings and standards will improve. We have to change the narration about Africa, Africa can still do things right”. He added.
